Haaaaapppy Friday! I am so happy today, for no particular reason. But who needs a reason to feel happy? And I am so excited because I have started my new piece. The White Horse. Now I have a few secrets to share with you. I have never drawn a horse before, not ever! Well, maybe once when I was about twelve, but that is so long ago I have forgotten all about it! So, no horses. Nor have I ever drawn an all white animal! After my experience with Splodge and talking to a friend on Instagram, I thought it was time to take the white challenge head on. And just to really throw myself in at the deep end, I have never drawn anything metallic before - and this horse has gold and diamanté and a chain (which I am dreading attempting, but in a fun kind of way!). Anyway, I am telling you this so that I can't chicken out and I have to at least try and do it. No horses, no white animals, no metal.
I am just taking my time and concentrating hard. I know that white is rarely white, and this horse is no different, there are only a few tiny parts that are truly white, he has speckles and all kinds of greys and taupe shades and I see a lot of pinks too. The photos below are my first two full days of work. That little diamanté thing (I know, all you lovely horse people are rolling your eyes at me now. I don't know what you call it!), took a very long time and still needs more work, but I have begun on the eye and the area above it. You can see just how many colors are actually in it and I know I will need to go darker than this yet. And at the minute the second ear stands out like a sore thumb. I am sure once darker parts of the picture go in, it will want darkening up and will not stick out so much. This is one of those things where experience helps. The temptation not to go that dark was very great. My head tells me that this is a white horse -that ear is wrong. But it did not look wrong on the photo and I know that I have not done it anywhere near as dark yet as it should be. So eventually it will settle in to the picture and look right. It just takes a little confidence to do it.
I have to tell you that I am really enjoying this one, although I may not be saying that when I get to the chain part! I just can't wait to get back into my art room and carry on with this piece. So that is it for me this morning, as ever if you want to subscribe to my blog click the little orange feed reader symbol either at the side on a desk top or iPad or scroll right to the bottom of the page on your mobile. I hope you have a few exciting art challenges of your own on the go. Have a fantastic weekend and happy drawing!
